The idea that
people have guardian angels is as old as human culture
itself. Although guardian angels are not a component
of the Roman Catholic dogma, Pope Johannes XXIII.
stated in 1959 during the celebration of the guardian
angels on October 2nd: “Throughout our entire life,
we must keep a deep affection for our guardian angel
and we should often and full of trust repeat the
beautiful prayer which was taught to us in the days
of our childhood. This prayer reads as follows:
"Angel
of God, my guardian dearto whom God's love commits
me here. Ever this day/night be at my side to
light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen"
Like every part
of creation angels are a great mystery, albeit a
deeply personal one, because there is something which
knows us better than we know ourselves. This can
be very perturbing or even alarming. If we feel frightened,
we appear to not be in complete harmony with our
actions. Nothing remains secret, however. It is a
good preparation for a meeting with our guardian
angel to review our life, all of our actions and
our experiences. Such a look back can bring about
a lot of emotions. If we are ready to let go of everything,
including self-pity, fear, pain and guilt, and subsequently
to accept responsibility for our past, we can reach
a very special state, a state in which the true self
rests: Humility. There for the first time many of
us find this infinitely patient compassionate presence
that knows us so well from heart to heart: the holy
guardian angel.
Apart from the guardian
angel there are also the archangels, cherubs and
seraphs.
The archangels serve the universe
at a cosmic level and watch over the guardian angels.
The cherubs are angels of wisdom and watch over the
sky and the stars. The seraphs have the highest place
in the hierarchy of angels. Their nature is pure
love. They reside in immediate proximity of God and
permanently sing the praise of the creator.
